When you submit a link, it goes to our backend. Our systems contact YouTube, assemble the video or audio you asked for, and only then stream the finished file down to your device. That's different from image, audio, and video conversion on convrt, where your files normally stay inside your browser tab.

Use this responsibly

Only download content you're allowed to save. YouTube's rules (and copyright law) still apply — for example, official offline viewing is through YouTube's own app where they offer it. If you're unsure, skip the download or ask the creator. Our Terms and Privacy explain how convrt fits in.

How YouTube downloading works on convrt

When you paste a link and click Download, convrt's backend contacts YouTube on your behalf, retrieves the best available stream for the format you chose, and — for MP4 — merges separate video and audio tracks using FFmpeg before streaming the finished file to your browser. The whole process runs on the server, not inside your browser tab.

MP4 (video) gives you picture and sound together in a container that plays on virtually every device and media player. convrt picks the highest-quality MP4 video stream paired with AAC audio, merging them with a fast copy pass so quality is not degraded.

MP3 and M4A (audio only) strip the video track and re-encode the audio into the codec you pick. MP3 is universal — every device, car stereo, and speaker system understands it. M4A (AAC) reaches the same perceived quality at a smaller file size and is the native format for Apple devices and most streaming services.

Long videos or high-resolution clips can take a moment — the server is pulling the full stream before delivery begins. Keep the tab open until your browser's download dialog appears.

Which format should I choose, and what links work?

Supported URLs include standard watch pages (youtube.com/watch?v=…), short links (youtu.be/…), Shorts (youtube.com/shorts/…), and embed URLs. Playlist links, private videos, and live streams are not supported — paste the URL of a single public watch page.

Choose MP4 when you want to watch the video offline, send it to someone, or edit it in a video editor. Most phones, tablets, and computers play MP4 without any extra software. Choose MP3 when you only care about the audio — a talk, a podcast upload, a music track — and need the widest device compatibility. Choose M4A for audio that will live in iTunes, Apple Music, or any modern streaming-aware library; M4A typically produces a cleaner sound at the same bitrate as MP3.
